Beta Version
InfluenceMap is a global think tank providing data-driven analysis to investors, corporations, governments, global media, and civil society on issues related to climate change and energy. InfluenceMap’s LobbyMap platform assesses corporate engagement with government climate policy and regulations. A full explanation of our methodology can be found here.
This platform showcases InfluenceMap's initial analysis of corporate climate policy engagement in Brazil, through the assessment of 20 of the largest and most climate-relevant companies and 12 industry associations operating in the automotive, aviation, energy (oil and gas), new energy (renewables and battery), mining, steel, paper and forest products, chemicals, consumer staples, and electric utilities sectors in Brazil. This Beta version of the platform (available for use in the short term) provides accessible analysis, including rankings and profiles, of corporate engagement with climate policy in Brazil, drawn from a database of over 2,800 individual data points. The number of companies assessed under the platform will soon increase to provide a more comprehensive overview of industry actors in Brazil.
Recognizing the limited sample size, especially in comparison to the scale of Brazil’s economy, it is important to note that the analysis may not be representative of all companies in these sectors. The primary objective of the study is to develop an understanding of corporate climate policy engagement in Brazil and to assess the extent to which the climate policy engagement of these companies is science-aligned. The platform is directed at a range of stakeholders, including but not limited to: investors in Brazilian companies as part of InfluenceMap's work with shareholders on climate governance and accountability; Brazilian companies and industry associations that aim to align their advocacy positions on climate policy with scientific pathways to limit warming to 1.5°C; and civil society organizations that aim to understand the influence of the corporate sector on climate policy.
In Brazil's new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), published in November 2024, the government announced a commitment to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 59% to 67% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels, in line with its net-zero emissions by 2050 target. Corporations in Brazil are extensively involved in influencing the shape and ambition of Brazil’s emerging climate policies to deliver on these emission reduction targets. The companies and industry associations in this analysis are assessed on these policy areas.
InfluenceMap has summarized key findings from the platform in a briefing accessible here. The diagram below maps out the climate policy engagement of the largest and most climate-relevant companies operating in Brazil (please see FAQs for how these companies are chosen). The X axis (Performance Band) charts the position of a company and its industry associations on science-aligned climate policy, from oppositional (left) to supportive (right). The Y axis (Engagement Intensity) indicates how actively the company alone is engaging with climate policy, with the most engaged companies at the top of the graph. Hover over the graph to see more details on individual companies, and find each company's full metrics and online profile in the table below.
